6 Tips for planning a memorable Family Reunion

Some of my fondest memories growing up are getting together with my aunts, uncles, and cousins at my grandparent’s home in California. We had a close relationship with our cousins and loved spending time together. Naturally, we wanted to give our children an opportunity to build the same bonds of friendship with their cousins, so a few years ago we decided to schedule a family reunion every 2 years. As siblings, we committed to making the family reunion a priority to attend.

Here are a few tips that we’ve used to make our Family Reunions a memorable experience for everyone who attends.

1. Choose a date and duration

With everyone’s busy schedules, choosing a date that works well for everyone can be one of the biggest challenges. My siblings have children that range from adult married children in their early twenties down to babies under a year old. For our family, it works best to schedule the reunion during the summertime so we can avoid conflicts with school schedules.

It’s important to choose your reunion date as soon as possible to so that everyone has an opportunity to “plan around” the reunion date. We hold a family meeting towards the end of the reunion to choose a date for the next reunion (more information on this later).

As you’re choosing the length of your family reunion, keep in mind the distance each family member will be traveling and make sure it’s worth everyone’s time to attend. Also, sometimes it takes a little time for cousins to “warm up” to each other, so our recommendation is for a reunion to last 3-4 days.

2. Choose a great location

When choosing a great location, it’s important to consider where everyone lives and what their individual situation is for traveling to and from the reunion.

Over the years, we have planned reunions with my family, my husbands family, and family friends at some of these great locations:

  • Cabin in the Mountains
  • VRBO/Airbnb at the beach or a lake
  • Disneyland/Disney World
  • Cruise ship
  • Houseboat at the Lake

On my side of the family, my parents live in Utah County, Utah. My siblings and I live in Utah, Nevada, and Arizona. We wanted our reunion to be really economical for everyone involved so the last few years we have chosen a cabin in the mountains of Southern Utah. With a central location, we were each able to drive to the reunion.

Some of our family members have ATV’s and RZR’s so the cabin setting gives everyone an opportunity to ride the equipment as part of our activities. If you have boats and wave runners, you might want to consider a lake destination.

3. Plan activities that interest everyone

When planning a reunion for such a broad range of people, we like to plan a lot of activities with different ages in mind.

Even when we stay at a cabin in the mountains, we plan an “outing” day for everyone. We’ve hiked Bryce Canyon, gone to the lake and fished, hiked to a cave, and had a picnic.

This past reunion we asked 2 family members with younger children to plan activities for the younger kids, and a family member with teenage kids to plan an activity for the older kids. One of the activities was a “bake-off with the teens”. In a boy vs girls competition, each team baked a cookie masterpiece with the younger cousins as the judges for the competition. (see photo below)

Our family loves Harry Potter – so one year we had a “Harry Potter” themed day at our reunion. The kids (and adults) created wands, answered trivia, and we made homemade “butterbeer” for dessert that night.

In a cabin setting we also set up a “puzzle” table and bring lots of puzzles that everyone can work on during down time.

Possible reunion activity ideas (some with links below):

4. Build Traditions

One event that everyone looks forward to every reunion, is our traditional family BINGO game. This tradition has been carried on from my grandparents. Each family, including my parents, brings an assortment of inexpensive treasures and treats they’ve collected. (BINGO Prizes come from places like the Target dollar section, dollar store, Michaels Craft, Harbor Freight and Tool, etc… ). My parents have a BINGO game that they bring each year with the cage and balls that the kids love to turn. You can find a great BINGO game here. We make sure everyone earns a BINGO at least one time, but usually, they get hit it several times as we all love to bring BINGO prizes (see photo below).

Do you have a family tradition you can bring into your reunion? If you haven’t had one, it’s easy to start. These are the things that glue the family together and teach the kids they belong to something big.

5. Weave in a little family history

With the family gathered together, it’s a perfect time to share some family stories. At one of our recent reunions, I created an “Our Heritage” board with pictures of my parents, their parents, and their grandparents on it. I included some fun facts about each person. We went around the room and the kids took turns reading information about each of our relatives.

In one of my very favorite books by Bruce Feiler “The Secret to Happy Families” he talks about how when kid’s hear stories about their ancestors doing hard things, it sends a message to the kids that because this relative was capable of doing hard things, they are capable of doing hard things. A family reunion is the perfect setting to share these stories.

6. Plan great meals

When planning our reunion, we try and look at some of our traditional family meals that work great for a crowd. All the men in our family like to smoke meat – so last time we smoked meat and make Grandma’s traditional baked beans to go with the meat. Everyone loved it.

Some of our favorites:

  • Hawaiian Haystacks
  • Taco Salad
  • BBQ Hamburgers
  • Lasagna
  • Smoked Meat

We usually plan an easy breakfast the day of our outing, like donuts, yogurt parfaits, or cereal. Pancakes and breakfast casseroles are saved for a day when we’ll be doing activities around the cabin.

Deli sandwiches are a great option for lunches. With an assortment of meats, cheeses, and toppings, everyone can build their own sandwiches.

We usually assign a different family each day to make dessert. Make sure you communicate any food allergies or dietary needs. In our family we have a severe nut allergy so we always remind everyone that we need to have a “nut free” family reunion.

7. Take a Family Photo

With the whole family gathered together, it’s a great idea to take a family photo. You can coordinate outfits, have a family matching T-shirt, or have everyone come as they are, but the most important thing is to get a family picture.

We usually create a “shared” photo file that everyone can upload their reunion pictures to. We’ve used these photos in family calendars and Christmas gifts. They are priceless.

8.Communicate, communicate, communicate!

1-2 months before our reunion, we email a rough itinerary to all the adults including possible meal ideas and a list of possible activities. We ask for everyone’s input and then compile a final itinerary that we send out to everyone 1-2 weeks before we leave. Our final itinerary includes a list of meal preparation and clean-up assignments for each family so everyone has an opportunity to help out and mom and dad aren’t stuck in the kitchen the whole time.

Our itinerary always has room for some flexibility, but we’ve found that it’s nice when everyone knows what to expect, especially the kids. We bring a printed copy to post on the fridge at the reunion so everyone is on the same page.

On the last night of the reunion, we usually hold an “adult” meeting for all of the siblings, to talk about what worked well and to discuss the date of our next family reunion, and who will be in charge of it. We rotate through our siblings who will be in charge of the following reunion.

With a little planning, preparation and share of responsibilities, you can plan a memorable event that will be treasured for many years to come.

What are your family reunion traditions? I’d love to hear.

10 Expert tips for visiting Disneyland on crowded days

When my boys were young my parents bought us annual passes to Disneyland one year for Christmas. We lived in Utah at the time, but we would visit at least twice a year and spend 6 days at the park each visit. We loved the memories we were building together as a family so much we renewed our passes for many years.

In many ways, I feel like my boys grew up in the park. We charted the boys’ growth every year by talking about which rides they were now tall enough to ride. My middle son was always a little bit shy, but when he got into pin trading he wouldn’t hesitate to ask a cast member to see their pins. My oldest son was asked to be in the Disneyland parade one visit. We have many, many great memories of our visits to the parks. Disneyland is our happy place.

When our kids were in Elementary school we could take them out of school and enjoy a trip to Disneyland in the “off-season”, however as they got into Middle School and High School, it just became difficult for them to miss school. We have had to learn how to manage our visit during the busier times of year.

We’ve put together some of our favorite tips for enjoying the parks on a crowded day.

1. Don’t try and see everything in one day

Over the years we’ve met a few families who absolutely hate Disneyland. It sounds so crazy to us, but in talking with them, we found out they had come to Disneyland on a super busy day and tried to fit everything in, in one day.

Disneyland tickets are expensive, but did you know that it gets cheaper the more days you stay? If you’re spending the money to come to Disneyland, spend just a little more to stay a couple of days. Having a couple of days in the park gives you the flexibility to see and do everything you would like to do and still enjoy your visit.

2. Download the Disneyland Resort App

Download the official app for the Disneyland Resort before you head to Disneyland. The app allows you to purchase tickets, see ride wait times, browse maps, purchase and manage the Max pass, locate Disney Characters, manage Disney Cast member photos, Play games, and order food online in the park.

3. Get the Max Pass

In recent years, I have been the fast pass “manager” for our family. I would gather everyone’s park tickets and head across the park to pull fast passes. While I was gone, my family would get in line for another ride. After I pulled the fast passes, I would head back across the park and get in line with my family. It was exhausting.

Disneyland recently introduced an “online” fast pass system called the Max Pass (see photo below). There is a small fee per day to purchase the Max pass, but we feel it’s worth paying for. The Max Pass allows you to connect your group together and schedule fast passes through the app on your phone. When you purchase the Max Pass, it also includes the Photo Pass, which gives you the opportunity to download any ride or cast member photos that are taken of your group while you have the Pass.

The best part is that every time you book fast passes it tells you what time you can book your next ones. I set an alarm on my phone for the next fast pass time, and no matter where I was at in the park, I was able to book our passes. You guys, this is a game changer! Shorter lines to ride the most popular rides plus all of our Disney Photos – we love the Max Pass!

You save $5 per person if you add the Max Pass at the time you purchase your tickets through Disneyland.com. If you purchase your tickets through an outside source, you have the option of purchasing the Max Pass through the app after you enter the gate every morning. In this case, we recommend purchasing it right after you enter the gate in the morning so you can take full advantage of the pass.

For more information on the Max Pass, click here. (Don’t forget to get the photo numbers of all your ride photos so you can download the photos as part of your pass.)

If you decided to not splurge on a Max pass, make sure you always have a fast pass pulled for your group.

4. Use the Single Rider line

In an effort to get as many people onto attractions as they can, Disney has added the “Single Rider” line to many of it’s most popular attractions. If everyone in your group is over the age of 7 and each member of your group is willing to be separated from each other while you are on the attraction, it’s a great way to get on some of the most popular rides fairly quickly.

For example, the stand by line for Racers was 100 minutes, but we were able to get in the single rider line and our entire group was on the ride within 15 minutes.

5. Arrive early and stay late

You will find the shortest lines in the park for the first few hours of the day and the last 2 hours at night. Arrive at the park early and hit a lot of rides. If you need to take a break in the afternoon, ride the train around the park, attend a show, or go back to your hotel room to rest for a little bit. During the evening parade and firework show, the rides tend to be a little shorter. Many people leave the park after the evening firework show.

Some of my kid’s favorite memories in the park are going on Big Thunder Mountain 5 times in a row because there was nobody in line for the attraction. As fast as they could get off the attraction and get back in line, they were on the ride again.

6. Visit Animation Academy

Have some time to kill while waiting for your next fast pass? Are you wanting to take a break from walking around? Head over to Animation Academy located inside Disney’s California Adventure on Hollywood Blvd. You have the opportunity to learn how to draw Disney characters from an actual Disney Animator.

Animation Academy is a FREE class located inside an air-conditioned building so it’s a perfect rest stop on a warm day. All ages of our family have enjoyed the class and we’ve been able to uncover some animation talent we weren’t aware we had. Classes run about every 30 minutes and people begin lining up a few minutes before the class begins.

7. Play Games!

My kids want to ride as many rides as they possibly can when we are at the park, so while we are waiting for a fast pass time, we will usually stand in line for a ride that doesn’t have a crazy stand-by line (under 45 min). While waiting in line we enjoy playing games.

An easy game to play in line with a group is “Heads up!” You can download the app and take turns holding the phone up to your forehead and guess what the word is based on everyone’s clues.

Disney recently added “Disney Play” to their app (see photo below) which has an interactive park for you to play at, tons of really fun trivia, and pieces you can uncover and collect throughout the park. You’ll see signs for Disney Play around the park. We had a lot of fun answering the trivia questions as a group. For more information on “Disney Play” click here.

8. Order your food through “Mobile Order Pick-up”

We were all hungry. We finally decided to eat at “Smokejumpers Grill” in DCA by “Soaring over the World”. We sent one family member outside to get a table and the rest headed inside to order our food. As we opened the door to go inside, we discovered the lines to order were all the way back to the doors. We closed the door, walked over to where our son had saved our table, and sat down.

We opened up the Disneyland App, went to “Mobile Order Pick-up” and chose “Smokejumpers Grill”. Then we passed the phone around to each family member so they could enter their order. We paid for the order through the app and let them know we were ready to pick it up. Within 10 minutes we were notified that our order was done. We then went to the “Mobile Order Pick-up” window and got our food. It saved us so much time and we were able to wait for our food at the table relaxing instead of standing in line.

Mobile ordering isn’t available at every restaurant in Disneyland and DCA, but it’s available at a lot of them. Save yourself time and hassle and check the app when you’re getting ready to eat at the parks. You can find additional information on “Mobile Order Pick-up” here.

9. Take a break on a “Relaxing” Rides

Whenever we need a break from walking around we go on what we call one of Disney’s “relaxing” rides. Rides like “Pirates of the Caribbean”, “It’s a Small World”, “Disneyland Railroad”, “The Monorail”, and “The Little Mermaid” at DCA are what we call “relaxing” rides. Did you know that the “Pirates of the Caribbean” ride at Disneyland lasts about 16 minutes? Because each boat holds a lot of people and they operate a lot of boats, the line for “Pirates” tends to move pretty quickly, and a 16-minute ride gives you a nice break from walking around.

Did you also know that you can stay on the “Disneyland Railroad” however long you would like? When our kids were young and they would start to get tired and grumpy one of us would volunteer to ride the train, which secretly meant “let them take a nap”. The relaxing ride around the park would usually put them to sleep. We would ride the train around the park a couple of times to let them sleep for a while or transfer them to their stroller when we got off. It’s the perfect power nap for them to enjoy the evening.

10. Start Pin Trading

When my kids were young, we realized pretty quickly that we didn’t want to buy them big bulky souvenirs that we would have to haul around the park all day. A Disney Cast member introduced us to Pin Trading and we’ve been hooked ever since. Disney pins are small and light weight, so they make the perfect souvenier.

There are a few guidelines to begin pin trading in the park, for example, you are only able to trade official Disney pins with cast members. As long as the cast member doesn’t already have the pin that you are wanting to trade, they will trade your pin.

One of our favorite things about pin trading is that Disney releases special sets that you can only get by pin trading with the cast members. Our days at Disneyland have turned into “treasure hunts” as we are on the look-out for cast members with pin lanyards that we can trade with.

Disney sells Pin starter kits that come with a lanyard and a couple of pins to help you get started on your pin trades.

10 Tips for your first visit to Paris

My first visit to Paris was during the winter of 2006. My husband had meetings in Paris the following week, so we met 3 other couples a week early to explore the city. It was love at first sight! From the cobblestone streets to its breathtaking architecture, it’s rich culture, and delicious food, Paris has stolen my heart. Today I’m sharing my best tips on how to make your first visit to Paris an experience you’ll never forget.

10 trips for your first trip to Paris | Travel to paris | Just Mama Leish | What shoes to wear to Paris | Safety tips | Paris museum pass | crepes | baguette | Eiffel Tower | Paris Metro | How to Paris | Vacation Paris | France | Europe travel | Paris RER | #paris #paristravel #howtoparis

1. Bring outlet Adapters

Paris power outlets operate at 220 Voltage, whereas in the United States we operate on 110 Voltage. You want to make sure you use power adapters to plug in your electronics so you don’t fry your equipment. We prefer adapters that have USB port options. Our favorite adapter is found here. It works in Europe, the United Kingdom, and 145 other countries.

2. Bring comfortable shoes

On our most recent trip to Paris, we used the Metro, RER, and Uber to get around the city, and we still walked 68 miles in 10 days. Bring comfortable shoes!! You’ll also want to avoid wearing any type of a skinny heel. The cobblestone streets are beautiful to look at, but difficult to walk on, especially in skinny heels. I opted for a low thick heeled boot and a super comfy tennis shoe that I rotated throughout the week. Make sure you wear your shoes for a week or two before you leave so they’re well broken in before you arrive.

When we visited Paris for the first time 13 years ago, you would never want to wear a white tennis shoe. It was the first indication you were an American tourist and, thus you’d become the target of pick pocketers and scammers. Today, white tennis shoes are very much in style in Paris, and you’ll find many Parisians wearing them. You still want to avoid wearing a “running shoe”, but a simple white tennis shoe is fine.

My boots are by Abedo and I can easily walk 5-6 miles in them. You can find them here. The Nike tennis shoe I wore can be found here.

3. Use a travel purse/bag

About 6.9 million people visit the Eiffel Tower each year. Because Paris attracts so many visitors, it also attracts Pickpockets. I feel very safe walking many places in Paris by myself, but use caution when visiting historic sites, museums, and traveling on the metro. Pickpockets are a real threat. On our most recent visit, we met a couple who had been pickpocketed the first day they were in the city. Don’t ever put your phone in your back pocket. If possible, zip your phone and valuables in your jacket pocket or keep it secured in a travel purse/bag like this.

A few other safety tips: Pickpockets work in groups, be on high alert if someone approaches you and asks you if you speak English. It’s best to nod your head “no” and walk away. Parisians are very private people and generally keep to themselves. If someone is approaching you, chances are it’s to pickpocket or try to scam you. Keep walking. Keep your passport and any valuables locked in your hotel safe if possible.

4. Learn a few key phrases in French

The French have a reputation for being “rude”, however, I have found that if you learn a few basic phrases, it makes a world of difference. Many people in Paris speak English, however, it’s polite to follow french culture and greet the person you would like to speak to, before beginning to ask them questions or directions.

Bonjour – Hello/ Good Day!

Bonsoir – Good Evening

Parlez-vous Anglais – Do you speak English

oui – yes

Merci – Thank you

For example, if I were wanting to ask for directions from someone my conversation would look something like this: “Bonjour Madame. Parlez-vous Anglais?” Then they respond with “oui/yes” and I would say “Merci, could you tell me where ….”

I love Babbel and Duolingo if you would like to work on your French before visiting Paris. Both have apps available. We also found the “Say Hi” app really helpful when we had questions for our Uber drivers, who didn’t speak English.

5. Book tickets for the Eiffel Tower 2-4 weeks before you visit Paris

You’ve come all this way and you definitely want to visit the icon of Paris, the Eiffel Tower. It’s 341 steps up to the first tier of the Eiffel Tower and 679 steps up to the second tier. If you don’t want to climb the Eiffel Tower steps or you would like to visit the Sommet of the Tower (so worth it!) you will want to book your tickets ahead of time to avoid having to spend hours in line waiting to ride the lift. You can book your tickets here.

6. Get a Museum Pass

Instead of paying for each museum and historic site you visit, I recommend getting the Paris Museum pass. The Museum pass allows you tunlimited access to over 50 museums and monuments and at many sites, allows you to skip the long lines and go straight into the museum (An exception is the Palace of Versailles. The pass will allow you entry into Versailles, but it won’t allow you to skip the line. See the Versailles website to schedule a time of entry – a feature they added the week after our last visit – yay for you!!).

For the Museum Pass prices and a list of everything that is included on the Museum pass you can visit here.

Additional Tip: Make a list of the places you want to visit before you go and note the days and hours they are open before you plan your trip. Some museums are closed on certain days and others stay open late one day a week. For example, Versailles is closed on Mondays and the Louvre is closed on Tuesdays.

7. Use the Metro/RER to get around

There are 2 train lines in Paris, the Metro – which has shorter routes to get around the city, and the RER line which has longer routes and extends outside to the Suburbs of Paris. You will find a Metro/RER station within a short walking distance of nearly every site you will want to visit. When we visited Paris the first time, we carried small maps with us to calculate our routes. They have since added more train lines, and thankfully they have an app to make calculating your journey a lot easier.

My husband and I ended up in a big debate over which train routes to use to go to the Sacre Couer one day, only to discover that we had each downloaded different apps for the trip. He used the Citymaps app and I was using the Paris Metro app. Both apps worked great and both had routes to get to the Sacre Couer, they just each took a different route. The good news is we ended up testing both apps and you’d be safe with either one.

Additional tips: When you get to the station and let’s say for example you are looking for the RER A line. The signs will list the RER A line with 2 different stops on it. Those stops are the last stops of each line. In the app it will give you the route and an optional train map – you can double check the end line names with the map.

Make sure you hang onto your train ticket, as you will need it to exit the train stations. Don’t be afraid to ask at the booth which ticket option is best for you. At our last visit, the attendant told us about a Monday-Friday ticket that gave us unlimited access in all the zones for 28 Euro. Also, remember to guard your phone and valuables against pickpocketers, especially during rush hour.

8. Ride the On/Off Bus

One of the best ways to get a good feel for the city is to ride the On/Off bus. We recommend the Big Bus Tours. They have 2 separate lines that run in the city. We recommend starting with the red line. Not only are you able to see the beautiful city, but you have the option of listening to a guided tour that gives the history and information behind all of the places you see on the tour. The best part about the bus is you can get off at any of the monuments and tour the monument and get back on and continue the tour.

We booked our tickets ahead of time on their app and they sent out notifications letting us know if there were protestors that would be affecting their normal routes.

9. Enjoy the Cafe’s

Watching the people, the cars, the darling shops, while eating a Croque Monsieur sandwich and a bowl of French onion soup at the Cafe is complete heaven. I could sit at the Cafe’s in Paris and soak in the city, all day every day.

A few tips: First, dining in Paris is an experience. The Parisian’s consider it rude to bring your check out to you. They want you to enjoy your experience and to not feel rushed. You will always need to ask for your check. Simply say “s’il vous plait” (please) while making the motion of signing a check in the air.

Second, when ordering water they will ask you if you want it flat of bubbly. Bubbly is soda water. If you order flat water, they will ask you if you want tap water or bottled water. You can save money by ordering “tap” water. The water tastes fine and it’s completely safe to drink.

10. Baguettes, Crepes, Macaroons, and Pain Au Chocolat

One day you will return home and think “why didn’t I get crepes twice a day while I was in Paris?” or “What I wouldn’t give for a baguette sandwich right now!” I don’t know how they do it, but they take a thin slice of ham and a thin slice of cheese, and put it on a baguette and create what seems to be the best tasting sandwich ever. It’s so simple and so yummy!! The best part is you can find them at vendors on the street.

Eat the baguettes, the crepes, the macaroons, and the Pain Au Chocolat (Chocolate croissants). Trust me, your only regret will be not eating more when you had the chance and not sneaking some home with you on the plane.

7 Tips For Your First Visit to Rome, Italy

Oh Rome! A city rich in history, architecture, culture, amazing food, and warm, friendly people. If you’re planning your first trip to the “Eternal City”, or you’re returning again, we have a few tips for you.

1.Wear comfortable shoes!

The roads in Rome are all made out of cobblestones and most are in their original form – hundreds of years old, so many of the streets in the city center will be bumpy and uneven. I recommend a comfortable flat shoe or a small “wedge” heel for stability. (I love Abeo short boots for extreme comfort) Since you will be doing a lot of walking, make sure you break in your shoes before arriving. We walked 5 miles the first day and 7 1/2 miles the second day.

2. Don’t drive in Rome!

The driving in Rome is crazy – if there are traffic laws, they appear to be very loose. The drivers are aggressive and there are very few places to park down in the center of Rome. We recommend looking at these options for getting around: Taxi, Uber, City Bus, Private pick-up service, or Metro.

Traveling to and from the airport we used Welcome Pick-ups. They were very professional and prompt. We used Uber twice – the first to travel about 20 minutes outside of the city and the second time to get to an early tour one morning in the historic center. Our Uber prices were a bit heavy, but each vehicle we were picked up in had plenty of space for at least 4 people. If you are traveling with a party of 4, Uber is a good option, because you can split the fare with the rest of your party.

Don’t be afraid to use the Metro – it’s the most economical way to get around. For example, in order to get to our early morning tour time, we took an Uber into the city center – our Uber fare was 30 Euro – one way. At the end of our tour, we took the Metro back to our hotel and the metro fee was 3 Euro for 2 people. So economical! We could have taken the metro to the tour, we just would have needed to plan a little more time to change trains.

3. Book a tour!

Rome was not built in a day, however, it is possible to see a good portion of it in a day, if you book the right tour. We booked the “Rome in a day tour” with Walks of Italy and it was worth every penny. Our tour included the Vatican, Colosseum, and the Historic center. We had a stop in the historic center for gelato, and we were given an hour break for lunch. Our tour guide was Camilla, who was born and raised in Italy and had been giving tours for 17 years. She had a passion for Rome and made the day so enjoyable, teaching us about Rome’s rich history and culture. Our tour had 11 people in our party. If you book a tour with Walks of Italy, they guarantee your group will be under 15 people.

To become a tour guide in Italy, it takes years of studying history, architecture, and art and involves rigorous testing to keep your licenses up to date. There is no possible way to fully study everything you need to know before visiting Rome and we were grateful we had Camilla to help us make the most of our visit.

Our tour included St. Peter’s Basilica (my very favorite!!) and the Sistine Chapel, which are Holy places, which means they have a dress code. Both men and women are asked to cover their shoulders and knees. They also don’t allow any knives to be brought in.

4. Eat Authentic Food!

We found the authentic restaurants to be very reasonable and the food to be amazing! A few tips to avoid tourist traps – the authentic restaurants in Rome don’t start serving dinner until 7pm. If a restaurant is serving dinner before 7pm, it is likely a tourist trap. Authentic restaurants will never have someone out front of the restaurant trying to entice you to come in. They don’t need to, they have plenty of business.

A few places we loved during our visit were: Gaia, bio a small restaurant by the University. Everything they make is organic and tastes amazing! On our first night in Rome, we visited Gaia.bio for dinner. We were exhausted and starving, after having traveled for 24 hours. I made the mistake of putting my cross-over bag on the back of my chair while I ate. When we were done eating, I grabbed my phone and headed out the door, not realizing I left my bag. We got back to our room and went straight to bed. About midnight our hotel phone rang. It was the front desk letting us know that the owner of the restaurant had brought my bag and they had it at the front desk. This sweet man had called the local hotels and found which one we were staying at. When I got my bag, everything was in it – my passport, credit cards, and cash. Not only was the food amazing, but his kind act completely saved the course of our trip. If you are in the area, pay this good man a visit. You will not regret it!

We also loved Amalfi’s by the Vatican.

5. Eat as much Gelato as you can!

Gelato is a frozen dessert widely enjoyed in Italy made from custard, cream, and milk. It’s similar to ice cream, but generally has less air and less fat in it. We learned that not all gelato is created alike. The best quality gelato is made from scratch with real ingredients and has natural colors, for example, pistachio is more of a brown color, not a green color, as you might think. The lower quality gelato shops use artificial ingredients and artificial colors. Berry gelato should have a deep muted color instead of a bright pink.

Our guide suggested pistachio with chocolate while we were on our tour and it has become my favorite combination! I’m typically not a big pistachio fan, but it was so yummy, I’m sure I’ll be dreaming of this combination until I return back to Rome.

There are a lot of amazing gelato shops. Our favorite gelato shop was Don Nino by the Pantheon. Troppo bene!

6. Learn a few basic phrases in Italian!

In the European culture, it’s polite to always greet someone when you see them. Learning a few phrases such as “Hello”, “Do you speak English”, and “Thank you” is a great gesture. We found that there weren’t as many people who spoke English in Italy as there has been in other European countries we’ve visited, so we used the “SayHi” Translate App when we wanted to speak to someone who didn’t speak English. It allows you to type or speak what you want to say, so you can easily hold it up to someone who is speaking Italian and it will pick up what they are saying and translate for you.

Hello! – “Ciao” (pronounced chao)

Good Morning – “Bouongiorno” (pronounced bonjorno)

Do you speak English? – “Parli Inglese”

Thank you – “Grazie” (prouncounced gratzi)

7. Visit the Rome, Italy Temple.

If you have Christian beliefs, or just enjoy seeing beautiful buildings, it is definitely worth the 20 minute drive to visit the Rome, Italy Temple by The Church of Jesus Christ. The grounds are absolutely beautiful and they have a visitors center that has the Christus statue along with statues of the original twelve apostles. These statues were carved from the same marble quarry as Michealangelo’s David was carved. They also have an unbelievable stained glass wall that depicts many of the parables that Jesus Christ shared in the New Testament.

3 Things you can do today to keep your kids safer on mobile devices.

As the mom of 3 boys, I have a love/hate relationship with mobile devices. You can access valuable information, spread so much good, and you can keep in contact with family and friends no matter where they live. But, let’s be honest, there is a lot of dangerous stuff out there, and we need to keep our kids safe.

I want to start by saying, I am not an expert on mobile devices by any means. However, I am a mom who has been raising teenagers through the introduction of electronic devices and over the past 12 years, I have learned a lot along the way! Some of the lessons have been painful. But, if what I have learned can help you keep your kids safe, then the painful lessons will have all been worth it.

The topic of keeping your kids safe on mobile devices has many moving parts – how screen time affects young developing brains, how screen time is contributing to anxiety and depression in teens, what apps are safe to use, how much time should my child be on a mobile device, setting up safeguards on open DNS, what apps are safe to use, the dangers of pornography, etc… All Super important topics that we will save for another day.

Let’s talk about 3 things you can do today to keep your kids safer on their mobile devices.

I’m going to be talking mostly about the iOS platform (iphones, ipads, ipod touch – if they are still out there). The reason I have chosen to focus on the iOS platform is:

  1. iphones and ipad are what the kids are asking for
  2. We love Apple, but they put restrictions on 3rd party companies from restricting their devices – so as parents, whether we have an iOS device or not, we need to be able to understand how they work so we can safeguard our kids.
  3. Android has many 3rd party options available out that can assist with safeguarding devices.

1. Put in place a “Family Electronic Device Agreement”

A “Family Electronic Device Agreement” (see sample below) is designed to give you an opportunity to sit down with your kids and teach them about mobile device safety. It’s an opportunity to set up mobile device guidelines and to talk about different scenarios that they may come across while using a mobile device.

Some of the topics I recommend talking about are bullying, inappropriate pictures, stranger danger, and anything that makes them feel uncomfortable. Depending on their age, it’s a great time to teach about communicating on a mobile device. For example, “we don’t ever want the people you are with to feel that your mobile device is more important than they are. Please make sure you stay off your device while you are hanging out with your friends”.

One of the most important things we try to communicate with our kids is that mobile devices are a privilege that they earn. If they break our family agreement or if the device is having a negative effect on them, they can lose the privilege of having their mobile device.

I’m including a copy of our “Family Electronic Device Agreement” that you are welcome to download for free. This was written with teenagers in mind, so you may want to make some adjustments depending on the age of your children.

Something important to note, it is not a question of “if” your child will come across something inappropriate on their devices, it is more a question of “when”. If your child comes to you because they have seen something inappropriate, how we handle it – will determine if they will continue to come to you again. Try really hard to stay calm, even if you’re freaking out inside. Thank them for coming to you and let them know you are a safe person to talk to about anything. Try not to shame them or punish them so you can keep those lines of communication open.

2. Require all mobile devices to be plugged in your room for the night!

Do a quick google search “How much sleep do teenagers need?” Everything from the American Pediatric Association to the National Sleep Foundation all says the same thing – teenagers need at least 8-10 hours of sleep each night and younger children need even more. Sleep affects their ability to think and reason clearly, it affects metabolism, energy, and hormones. We can help them with all of this – by having their devices plugged into our rooms at night. It also limits the time they can be searching for things on their devices privately.

“What??” they will say! “But it’s my alarm clock!” Trust me, I have had numerous conversations with parents over the years about these same things and every single one who has said “but it’s their alarm clock” or “I don’t want my kids to think that I don’t trust them by making turn their phone in at night” has come to me at some point with huge regrets over trouble their kids have gotten into with unrestricted device access during the night.

Set the standard early if you’re just introducing electronic devices or start today if you’ve had them in your home for a while. It may be bumpy for a bit, but it will definitely be worth it – you can purchase an inexpensive alarm clock or an Amazon Echo or Echo Dot to use as an alarm clock. Keep them healthy and safe!

3. Set “Screen Time” on your child’s device.

Recently Apple has added the ability to set up “Screen time” on your device and any mobile device that is on your iCloud account. Screen time gives you the ability to schedule screen downtime, set time limits on gaming and social media Apps. It allows you to establish communication limits, create a list of Apps that are always allowed on their phones, and set up content and privacy restrictions.

The pictures below show step-by-step instructions on how to set up “Screen time”.

Quick and Easy Breakfast “Food Prep”

Chocolate Raspberry Overnight Oats

We opened 2 business locations in one year.  The 2nd location we did the demolition, layout design, and helped General the entire build out (while running the other location).  Life got a little crazy!

I mentioned to a friend that I didn’t have time to worry about what I was eating and she lovingly said “There has never been a more important time to worry about what you eat.  You need to keep your energy up to manage your day!”

It was the best advice I could have been given at the time, and thus “food prepping” became my new best friend!

I know you’re hearing “food prep” and thinking of a day-long process making heaps of meals – which can work awesome for some people, but for me, just wasn’t doable with such a full schedule.  I needed healthy foods I could prepare in a short period of time.

One of my “go to” breakfasts that is super easy to “food prep” is Chocolate Raspberry Overnight Oats from caraclarknutrition.com.

I can make 5 overnight oats in under 15 minutes.  Put the lids on, shake them up, and pop them in the fridge.  5 days worth of breakfasts, each in a pint size jar – so when I’m in a crunch for time, I can grab it and eat it on the go.

There are a lot of overnight oat receipes out there, but there’s just something about the combination of oats, almond butter, and cacao powder that make this one my favorite.  If you have a favorite, please share in the comments below.

Chocolate Raspberry Over Night Oats by Cara Clark Nutrition:

Combine in a pint jar:

1/2 c. rolled oats

1 T chia seeds

1 T cacao powder

1 T Natural nut butter (I love almond)

1/2 t vanilla extract

1/2 c frozen raspberries or mixed berries

1 c unsweetened almond milk

1-2 t pure maple syrup (optional)

Seal jar and shake – refrigerate overnight

Do you have healthy “on the go” breakfast ideas?  I’d love to hear them in the comments below.
